"winter wipeout"
swap meet '08
The First Annual "Winter Wipeout" swap meet and auction was held on
March 1, 2008 at Ski-Hi Park in Monte Vista, CO. The event was held in
conjunction with the Monte Marketplace, and was a huge success. The
vendors who normally attend the Monte Marketplace got to sell their
wares to a much larger crowd than usual, and the crowd was treated
to a full house of vendors selling everything from ladies' clothes to
chopped Harleys, knives, and Hot Rod Parts.

AUCTION

The Auction raised nearly $2,000 for FAST FRIENDS, and the patrons
who stayed for it got some great deals on Art, as well as some other
wonderful contributions donated by our supporters. Two small-plane
rides were donated, one each from
Depot Avionics in Alamosa, CO and
the other from
Rocky  Mountain Ag in Monte Vista, CO. B&W Body
Shop in Alamosa donated a complete paint job valued at $1,800. Sam
Haynie stepped up and donated, in addition to numerous door prize
items, a NAPA creeper valued at $139.

Members of the
H.A.M.B. internet traditional hot rod & custom forum
responded to a request for help, and donated over twenty pieces of art,
some of which were highly-contested in the auction. FAST FRIENDS
would like to thank these artists, as well as artists from the local area,
(especially  members of
The Art Thing) and the numerous other
contributors for their support and assistance! And special THANKS to
Art Goehl, who donated his auctioneering prowess to the proceedings.

Starting at 9 a.m., there were musical acts performing all day long.
Lightshine Music in Alamosa was kind enough to supply all the sound
equipment for the day, and Joey Bounds from the band Two Weeks in
Fiji came in with other band members and friends to set up all the
equipment the night before the event. Joey also ran the sound board
during all the performances. FAST FRIENDS would like to thank
everyone involved, especially Joey, for their time and effort in making
the music program a huge part of the event's success.

FIRST ANNUAL
OUTLAW
PINEWOOD DERBY
CHALLENGE

The First Annual Outlaw Pinewood Derby Challenge
was a big success, and there are already cars being built for next year!
Try as hard as they might, the adults with their highly-illegal and
custom-bodied cars got beaten soundly by a Cub Scout from Pack ???.
Thanks to Roy Ratzlaff and the other Scout leaders who helped us put
on the race, the Scouts who participated, and the inveterate racers
who built cars to compete. Next year will be huge!!

COME AND
GET IT!
Food was available in the kitchen, featuring breakfast burritos from
Virginia & Sam Salazar until they were gone. The rest of the day saw
hundreds of hungry people in line for hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot
links, hot dogs, nachos, cookies, and beverages. We'd like to thank
Ron Martinez from the Mountain View Restaurant for generously
donating a huge pot of green chili for those who wanted their food
smothered.  Jack's Market and the Alamosa Pepsi Bottling Group also
helped out, and special thanks goes out to Charlotte and Robin Crites
for doing such an outstanding job of getting the food prepared and
served in such a timely manner all day long. It was a herculean effort,
and FAST FRIENDS appreciates it! Also, thanks for all the help from
volunteers all day working in the kitchen, selling tickets, parking cars,
and doing all the other things needed to make an event of this size go
off smoothly. There are no doubt names omitted from this list, and we
sincerely hope everyone feels appreciated for their efforts and time.
No vendor food booths....
This is how we keep the admission free and still make money to
help our neighbors.
